I really enjoyed reading about Bayard Taylor's travels from Gibraltar to via India and China. His viewpoint is, of course, solidly that of a white man in Asia in the mid-19th century but he is a keen observer and tell his tale well. His Indian journey was longer and more substantial than I had expected. It was interesting how he got around. His account of the beginnings of the Taiping Rebellion, which would last another 10 years after he left, was also interesting. Finally, the way in which he came to sail with Commodore Perry's fleet on its first voyage to Japan and what they saw and experienced there, as well as his insights into the Bonin Islands (the international history of which is largely forgotten) were truly fascinating. Almost as dessert, he includes an account of stopping at St. Helena to visit Napoleon-related sites there. It was disappointing, however, to realize that no one had bothered to proofread the text after it was scanned. The mis-scanned text was substantial. I probably wouldn't have minded this so much if the price of the book had been zero, but I am offended to be asked to pay for something so shoddy (and the producer should be embarrassed to have charged for it). I know these books often come with disclaimers owning up to the lack of proofreading, but this really was beyond the pale. If you think you might be distracted by substantial typos, don't buy this.
