With the help of her fellow bookseller, Henri DeAth, a former notary in a country where notaries are a powerful caste who not only know where the bodies are buried but probably helped bury them, Ava attempts to find her not-so-dead man before he turns up dead for real.

I enjoyed the characters and story. However there were numerous grammatical and or typographical errors. These errors were frequent enough to disturb the flow of reading.Product details

Death on the Seine A Paris Booksellers Mystery Volume 1 Evan Hirst Books Reviews
It was very simplistic, with odd, undeveloped characters. I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 because the plot idea and the main characters had potential. I just wished more had been done with it. It felt like it had been written by a precocious teen. I'm not sorry I read it, but unless the author's writing matures, probably will not read others by the same author.
Disclaimer I borrowed this book through my Unlimited subscription.
Death on the Seine is actually mis-titled as there is no death in the novel. There are several attempts at killing off various characters, but no one dies. The main character, Ava Sext, is a book-seller with a stand on the bank of the river Seine, who, along with Henri DeAth, gets involved in investigating an attempted murder. To my mind, Ava is not a particularly sympathetic character. She seems credulous (did she really believe she was a 'chosen one'?), illogical, and fool-hardy. Henri is her exact opposite, being a very logical and somewhat cynical character.
There are a number of characters in the book whose roles are clear but whose actions are confusing. Why is Yves so sure that someone is trying to kill him? None of the motives provided - at least until the explanation at the very end - are particularly plausible. What is this mysterious "work" that everyone seems to be involved in? Why was seemingly everyone on that mountain in Italy and how could there have been so many people going up and down a mountain path unseen?
While the basic idea for the plot has possibilities, there are many distractions for the reader. One thing that really bothered me was the practice of italicizing the names of Parisian landmarks in some places and not in others. I'm not sure why the place names were in italics to begin with. Use of italics for non-English phrases such as "c’est la vie" (sorry, but this form won't let me italicize) is standard practice, but putting place names in italics (Rue de Rivoli) is not. There are cases of words missing from sentences and a couple of cases of misusing words completely ("dilapidating" the family fortune instead of "depleting").
A good editor would have been able to catch not only the confusing language use but also the rather convoluted scenes in the book. I hope this author will find someone who can read and criticize the next book before it's published as she obviously has talent that simply needs to be guided.
I love Paris. I love red wine, French pastries, Parisian cafés and I love this book.
Great characters. Interesting plot. Well-written and witty. What's not to like?
~tons of editorial issues
~storyline ok
~characters fairly well defined but lacked depth, causing
familiarity to be fleeting
~would recommend for middle school preadolescents not
adults
I couldn't get into the story line and found it to be boring. The characters were there but uninteresting to know and follow up with. I don't recommend this author as a great crime mystery writer.
I was looking forward to reading this book given that I lived in Paris for a number of years. Sadly, it did not live up to my expectations.
The book has no substance and does not even do Paris justice. Shame.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which I read it in one sitting. Life is so complicated that I want my evening read to be relaxing, and this book did the trick. Well-written, it was light and fun. The characters are interesting. The main character, Ava, is new to sleuthing and her rookie mistakes made her even more likable. Her partner in crime is very enigmatic and very French (in the best way). As for the plot, it kept me guessing… Of course, the best part of the book was Paris. The descriptions of the city, food and drink were wonderful. It so inspired me that I've decided to go there this summer. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series before I leave.
I enjoyed the characters and story. However there were numerous grammatical and or typographical errors. These errors were frequent enough to disturb the flow of reading.
